The aim of the project<\/h3>\n

The commercial company's goal was to build a reliable, scalable and fault-tolerant IT infrastructure capable of serving all the services required for the business: Windows servers, file server, print server, SQL database and the web store engine. The system had to ensure continuous availability, even in the event of hardware failure.<\/p>\n

System design and deployment<\/h3>\n

1. VMware Cluster configuration<\/strong><\/p>\n

The two physical servers act as VMware ESXi hosts.<\/p>\n

The storage connects to both hosts via iSCSI.<\/p>\n

Using VMware vCenter, we created the cluster, enabled HA (High Availability) and DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler).<\/p>\n

2) Virtual machines and services<\/strong><\/p>\n

Windows servers:<\/span> AD, DNS, DHCP services in separate VMs.
\nFile server:<\/span> With DFS replication and quota management.
\nPrint server:<\/span> Centralised print management with GPO integration.
\nSQL Server:<\/span> Microsoft SQL Server 2022, with Always On configuration.
\nWebshop:<\/span> Linux-based LAMP stack, on a separate VM, with reverse proxy and CDN integration.<\/p>\n

3.)Failover logic<\/strong><\/p>\n

VMware HA<\/strong> automatically restarts VMs on the other host in case of hardware failure.<\/p>\n

Storage<\/strong> is always available to both hosts, so there is no data loss.<\/p>\n

SQL Server Always On<\/strong> provides redundancy at the database level.<\/p>\n

Safety and rescue<\/h3>\n

Snapshot-based backup:<\/span> daily VM snapshots.<\/p>\n

Acronis Backup & Replication:<\/span> backup to an external backup server.<\/p>\n

Firewall and VLAN segmentation:<\/span> separate network layers for administration, client traffic and database.<\/p>\n

Lessons and suggestions<\/h3>\n

The combination of VMware HA and DRS is ideal for building a fault-tolerant infrastructure in small and medium business environments.<\/p>\n

Storage redundancy is key: RAID10 and snapshot backups together ensure data security.<\/p>\n
